John and Jo Visit - November 2016

Kicking Off the Weekend at Cornish Pasty
John and JoAnna had spent the previous weekend with us and had been to Las Vegas during the week for a conference Jo was attending.  Keith was on the west coast for budget reviews while Shawna had to make a trip to Hartford for meetings.  We both returned to Phoenix on Thursday night at the same time - we were able to Uber home together.

Keith was off the Friday for Veterans Day and Shawna took a half day.  John and Jo's flight arrived at 11am so we picked them up and went straight to the Cornish Pasty Company for lunch where we had salads, pasties, and beer to kick off the weekend.  The next stop of the day was Top Golf.  Keith had played at the one in Las Vegas a few weeks earlier.  There was a 20 minute wait for a bay so we grabbed a beer at the bar before being escorted to where we'd play.  The concept is really cool: 3 stories of golf bays with a huge driving range, with all balls tracked by RFID.  Plus, waiter service to bring food and drinks - hard to beat!  We stopped by the grocery store on the way home to buy stuff for the Saturday night dinner, then had a nap.  We cancelled the formal dinner reservation and instead just bar hopped in Old Town Scottsdale, hitting Craft 64 (where we had pizza), Old Town Tortilla Factory (chips and queso), and finally The Beverly.

Lovely Pic at Craft 64
On Saturday morning, we all went on the Pink Jeep Tour, Scottsdale Edition, in the McDowell Mountains where we did the Sidewinder Ridge route.  It was just the four of us on the tour so it became a private tour.  It took about 30 minutes to drive to meet the jeep and then another 20 minutes in the jeep until we got to the trailhead.  It was quite different scenery than the Sedona edition but interesting none the less.  The tour was three hours.  On the way back, we stopped by Salt and Lime for lunch on the way home.  We had queso for the table and we split three tacos.  Lunch was OK but not worth a re-visit.

Pink Jeep Tour - Sidewinder Ridge
We grabbed some beer at the store on the way home to re-load for the evening.  It was a quick nap before getting up for a swim to wake us up - the pool was nice and warm from the new heater - though now the outside temperature was a bit too chilly!  JoAnna invited Lesley over for dinner, a woman who had once dated Jo's dad.  We stayed at the house and grilled: homemade tuna poke for an appetizer and then sausages, flank steak, corn, and sweet potato stacks for dinner - all finished off with some delicious ice cream.

Relaxing at Chez Dodds
We had to get John and JoAnna to the airport on Sunday morning for their 10am flight, then the rest of the day was filled by catching up with work as well as chores!

Kerstin Visit - October 2016

View from Camelback Mountain
After a weekend in Sedona and then a trip to the Grand Canyon and Page AZ, Kerstin arrived back at our house on the Thursday night at 7pm.  Shawna was on her way back from Hartford so Keith and Kerstin grabbed dinner at Mad Greens and then did a weekend of grocery shopping at Safeway.

We had to work mostly a full day on Friday so Kerstin used the opportunity to visit the Desert Botanic Gardens.  She drove back to the house to pick up Shawna and then back to meet Keith at his office at 2:45pm.  We all connected there and drove together in the 4Runner to the Echo Canyon trail head of Camelback.  Rangers were out in force letting everyone know that every day of the year someone is rescued for overheating and 6 people have actually died this year from the same.  We were all loaded up with water so felt good to go.  The trail is steep but has railings in the toughest parts.  Shawna made it all but the last 15 minutes while Keith and Kerstin made it to the top to see the beautiful views.  Likely Keith's first ascent of many to come!  We then all headed back to the house to cook dinner, with Keith and Shawna splitting a bottle of rose.  Dinner was a grilled flank steak, stacked sweet potatoes baked in a muffin pan, and green beans.  Delicious.

On Top of Camelback Mountain
Saturday was Kerstin's last day in town.  In the morning we walked Pinnacle Peak Trail, which is a 1.75 mile each way hike.  It is a great walk with heaps of people, along with some super signs  that identify all the plant life.  We went home for lunch, which was a creative use of leftovers: Shawna turned the fish from the night before into fish tacos which were much tastier than how it tasted the previous evening!  We also re-heated the sweet potato stacks which were even better the following day!  Keith had a quick nap before we headed out to the Sanctuary for a spa afternoon.  We intentionally arrived early to spend a bit of time in the pool, then all went for our 5pm appointments.  We all showered and changed at the spa and drove to dinner at Olive and Ivy.  Dinner was delicious: we had the bruschetta, lamb meatballs, artichoke hearts, wild mushroom pappardelle, and the scallops.  We wrapped up the evening with the lemon cake and sorbet.  It was immediately to bed, since Keith was taking Kerstin to the airport at 4:30am the next day.

Pinnacle Peak Hike
It was fantastic to see Kerstin for a couple of weekends and re-connect with an amazing friend.

Jean and Dick Visit - October 2016

Drinks at The Sanctuary
Now we are all settled in to the new place in Scottsdale, we have opened Chez Dodds for bookings, and the first visitors were Keith's parents.  They arrived the Thursday mid-morning.  After collecting their luggage they Ubered to the house.  Keith had a week-long work meeting and Shawna had to work, so they used the opportunity to head to Sedona for a day.  So they grabbed the 4Runner and drove up, returning on Friday afternoon.

Desert Botanic Garden
Keith was able to get out of work a bit early on Friday so made it home by about 4pm so we all had a glass of wine as we got ready to head to dinner.  The first stop was The Sanctuary for a bottle of wine so we could see the views.  The bar was jammed because a wedding was using the outside deck so it was busier and noisier than usual.  Following that, we drove to The Mission for dinner.  We ordered another bottle of wine and started with chips and table-made guacamole.  Since none of us were super-hungry we all ended up just having appetizers, including  Duck Carnitas Empanada, and Pork Belly Pibil.  We went to bed right after dinner.

We all woke up to some wonderful breakfast that Shawna had arranged - not just berries and yogurt but also baked oatmeal with fruit.  We had hoped to do some hiking but it was just too hot.  So instead we went over to the Desert Botanic Gardens to walk around.  The gardens really exceeded our expectations - we also joined so we could return for free in the future.  We grabbed a quick lunch at home before going to Taliesin West, the winter home and architectural school of Frank Lloyd Wright.  We were surprised to find that the following two tours were booked so we wandered the book shop for 45 minutes before joining our tour.  The tour lasts 45 minutes and showed us around both the exterior and interior of the buildings - quite interesting.  We returned home (only 10 minutes drive) to shower and change for dinner at Mastros, one of the best steak houses in town.  The dinner was good, with the highlight being the most enormous basket of french fries we ever had.

Taliesin West
Sunday was quite relaxing.  The only activity was watching two movies: Deepwater Horizon at the theater and Desert Cathedral at home on iTunes.  Desert Cathedral is the film produced by family friend Barbara Norris so it was interesting to see from that perspective.  Lunch was the same as Saturday (bread, crackers, cheese, and meats) while dinner was at home with grilled flank steak, chili lime corn and sweet potato fries.

Both Keith and his parents had flights on the Monday morning so they all Ubered together to the airport.

Move to Scottsdale - August 2016

Chez Dodds - The Scottsdale Edition
With Keith's offer at The Wolff Company, we were moving to Scottsdale!  We had found the house the weekend before Keith started his job and were able to move in two months later.  The moving truck had loaded in Baltimore and then took a week to get to Scottsdale.  Keith had been in Seattle for work but flew in Wednesday night to meet the movers on the Thursday. Shawna had been in the area since Sunday, working out of a hotel.

We woke up at 6am as we were to meet the movers at the house at 8am.  It worked out really well that the company transporting the 4Runner called us at 6:30 to let us know they were ready to meet us.  So we wrapped up breakfast quickly and met the driver behind Home Depot and got to the house by 7:30 - with the truck arriving at 8am sharp.

Along with the driver there were three other guys helping unload - as well as unpack.  Shawna had insisted that we pay for the unpacking which was one of the best decisions of the move - it really expedited the process.  Amazingly the entire house was unpacked and all the boxes carted off by 3pm.  The rest of the day was spent getting the kitchen, office, and bedroom unpacked and organized.  In order to cool off at the end of the day, we jumped in the pool for the first time - we are so excited to have that amenity at our house!

Both of us had to work Friday morning but Keith was able to leave at 1pm.  We had several vendors lined up to come to the house that day and also worked on more of the rooms.  On Saturday morning, we cranked out the rest of the house, with everything complete other than the pictures on the walls.  We managed to get a lot of errands completed in the afternoon - including buying new patio furniture.

On Sunday, we caught up on administrative items and put up all the pictures - so we are now locals!

Ewan and Sharon Visit - July 2016

Parry and Dodds Clan in DC
Ewan, Sharon, Lewis, and Madeline were on the East coast of the US visiting Disney and New York and came down to see us in Baltimore for a few days.

Ewan and Madeline Celebrating Their Win!
They arrived by train on the Wednesday and Keith was able to be home from his work trip in time to pick them up at Baltimore Penn Station.  We drove back to the house to get everyone set up in their rooms before heading out.  We walked along the path to the inner harbor where we rented paddle boats - Sharon skipped that one - with Ewan and Madeline on one boat and Keith and Lewis on the other.  We had a mini-race that team Madeline seemed to win!  The boats are exhausting to paddle, so it was definitely time for a beer after that so we walked across to the Cheesecake Factory and had a couple of beers while the kids chowed on a cheesecake each.  The next stop was at Looneys Pub on Canton Square for another round - and we decided to have dinner there where all of us ordered some type of taco dish.  It was then back to the house - where Shawna arrived at about 10pm as her flight was delayed coming in from Hartford.

Keith and Lewis
The next morning Keith needed to go to Virginia and Shawna had to work, so the guests spent several hours at the Science Museum.  Keith made it home by 7:30pm just in time to join everyone for a homemade pasta dinner - delicious!

Ewan, Madeline, Sharon and Lewis at the White House
Keith was able to skip work on the Friday.  We wanted to take the kids to a beach for a swim - and since the Inner Harbor has an "F" rating for swimming we needed to drive a bit!  We settled on Terrapin Beach Park just the other side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.  It was cool to drive over the bridge and we were early enough that we didn't have weekend traffic.  The park is a "hidden gem" - actually pretty nice with only two other groups there when we arrived.  By the time we left at 2pm, there were maybe six groups - but still pretty nice!  We all spent some time swimming - the water was never too deep and had a sandy bottom a couple of feet off shore.  We did see a couple of jellyfish but nothing that bothered us (though Madeline was not excited about the possibility of getting stung!).  It was time to eat on the way home so we drove into Annapolis to see that as it was just of the road on the way back to the house.  Lunch was just a quick sandwich off Market Space and then we headed down to the dock to see the harbor.  We were there three minutes before a 40 minute harbor cruise departed so we made a quick decision to jump on the boat tour.  We then grabbed an ice cream at Annapolis Ice Cream Company before driving home.  For dinner, we opted for a crab feast on the deck at Captain John's - including a game of cornhole at the end!

Lincoln Memorial
Vietnam Memorial
We definitely needed to show the kids some history so on Saturday we drove down to DC to power-tour the mall.  We couldn't all fit in the 4Runner so Keith, Ewan, and Lewis Ubered to the airport to pick up a rental car and met the girls in the Atrium of the Ronald Reagan building.  We walked to the White House, Vietnam, Lincoln, Korean, MLK, FDR, then World War II (while seeing the Washington).  It was a crazy-hot day: 100 degrees and super-humid.  We had lunch at Potbelly next to the Warner Theater and then decided to split up - Keith, Shawna, and the kids going to the Spy Museum and Ewan/Sharon over to the American History Museum.  However, the lines for both were almost an hour so we nixxed both and just walked over to the US Capitol.  Madeline decided she was quite unhappy about the heat - and we all seemed to agree with her!  So, we called it a day and headed back to the house for a desperately needed shower before heading out for dinner at La Tavola in Little Italy.  After dinner, we introduced the kids to Monopoly Deal which was a hit.  Madeline challenged Keith to a dance off (twerking included) and 'cuteness' won the day (aka Madeline).

Parry Clan at the Capitol
Sunday was a true day of Americana.  The first stop was Langermann's for brunch before walking over to Camden Yards to catch the Orioles vs Indians.  Ewan had got us super tickets - with the only downfall that they were not in the shade so it was a bit warm again!  Ewan sat next to a long-time Orioles fan so he was able to get the low-down on the nuances of the game.  We persevered in the heat and saw the Orioles win 5-3 with a walk-off home run at the bottom of the ninth.  We Ubered back to Fells Point where we had a couple of drinks at The Admirals Cup and then walked back to Canton - with Sharon, Shawna, and Lewis going to Safeway for food and Ewan, Keith, and Madeline stopping by another store for more beer.  Shawna and Sharon cooked fajitas for dinner and we played a final game of Monopoly Deal with Ewan taking the win.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame!
Monday was the last day.  Keith and Shawna had to work while the Parry gang went into town to see the Aquarium and to do a last bit of shopping.  They returned to the house within a few minutes of Keith leaving for his business trip so they could say goodbye to him.  After packing and getting cleaned up, Shawna took them to the airport for their flight home.

Hottest Day but Awesome Game!
It was fantastic to see them all - and the kids in particular were a lot of fun!  We look forward to seeing them all next summer in England/Scotland when we plan to be there for Dick and Jean's 50th Anniversary.

Jordan Visit - July 2016

Keith, Jordan and Shawna at the Lincoln Memorial
We decided that we wanted to spent more time with our godchildren, nieces and nephews so when each of them turn 12, we would invite them to spend a weekend with us.  Our first trial with this experiment was to have our goddaughter, Jordan, visit us in Baltimore.  The timing was great since we were moving soon to Scottsdale thus we could also use the weekend to hit up some spots we wanted to see before we left the area.  Even better is that Jordan did quite a bit of research and had planned the whole weekend for us, even restaurants!

Johnny Rad's for Dinner - A Jordan Pick
Keith flew in from his work travel to Baltimore, arriving on the Friday evening at the same time as Jordan around 6pm so he could meet her at her gate.  They took an Uber back to the house where Shawna was waiting for them.  After a quick tour of the house, we walked to Johnny Rads where we had dinner.  Jordan had seen this place on the Food Network and decided it looked cool - and cool it was.  It has a funky decor inside and it's known for pizza.  We tried the risotto balls for an appetizer which were quite tasty - who could go wrong with fried risotto stuffed with mozzarella!  We then shared the A-1 Meat pizza which was loaded with yummy prosciutto.  As we were deciding on dessert, Jordan mentioned she had never been to a Cold Stone - luck would have it that there was one across the street from our house so we walked there after dinner and had ice cream for dessert.  We then returned home and watched Eddie the Eagle - which was a very cute movie.

World War II Memorial
Bob Dole

Saturday was a long but very fun day.  We woke up around 7, had breakfast and then drove to DC to see all the major sites in one day - just as a good American would!  We parked the car near where we would have dinner later that day and then took a cab to our first site - the Lincoln Memorial.  We walked the entire mall, taking selfies at every major monument including the Vietnam, Korean, World War II, Martin Luther King, FDR, and Jefferson Memorials.  All of this before noon!  At the WWII memorial, we ran into Bob Dole who was hanging out and taking pictures with tourists - so we took one with him as well - very cool!  We walked over to L'Enfant Plaza to grab lunch with the mindset that each person could have their pick of lunch at the food court - unfortunately, almost every place was closed so we ate at the only one that was open, California Tortilla.

Washington Monument
Admiring Eleanor Roosevelt at FDR Memorial
Following lunch, we went to the Holocaust Museum where we had pre-purchased our tickets.  It took us about 90 minutes to go through all of the exhibits - quite sobering but well done.  Jordan really wanted to visit this museum as she had done a paper on Anne Frank when she was younger.  We then walked over to the Washington Monument - unfortunately there were no tickets left to go to the top.   We popped over to the Air and Space Museum where we did a 'fly by' (no pun intended) viewing of the airplanes that are hung in the main lobby area.  After this, we walked over to the Capitol.  At this point, Jordan was pooped from all of the walking (as was Shawna) so we took a cab to the last stop - the White House where Jordan asked one of the guards if he was carrying a gun - his reply "of course, ma'am".

The Capitol
White House
After this long day, we were ready to relax with a drink (or two) and dinner.  So we took a cab to Masa 14 (another restaurant that Jordan had picked out) and had a drink at the rooftop before we had dinner downstairs in the main part of the restaurant.  Dinner was very good - we shared a bunch of small plates including charred edamame, roasted shishito peppers, tuna sashimi, calamari, miso salmon, steamed pork belly buns, citrus hibachi roll, and yucca fries.  For dessert, we tried the freeze dried ice cream that Jordan had purchased at the Air and Space museum - it was gross.  Since we could not have this as the last taste in our mouth, we shared the nutella tart which was very good.  We then drove home, showered (we were quite smelly from all of the walking), and watched Sixteen Candles (Jordan had never seen it).

Masa 14
On Sunday, we slept in a bit and then had breakfast before we headed out to explore the harbor.  We walked to the National Aquarium and spent about 2 hours there.  Jordan had said she wanted to try crab cakes so for lunch we sat outside at Phillips Seafood and we shared the crab cakes, steamed crabs and Alaskan king crab legs - yummo!  Following lunch, we rented the dragon boats and peddled around the harbor for about 30 minutes - Keith did most, if not all, of the pedaling!  And because we had not had enough food at this point, we stopped at Cheesecake Factory to get some cheesecake for dessert - cookie dough and turtle cheesecake.  At this point, it was time to head back and clean up before Jordan and Keith flew out.  We cleaned up and took care of a few personal items and then Shawna drove Jordan and Keith to the airport where Jordan flew back to Dallas and Keith flew to Phoenix for work.

Crabby Lunch at Phillips
All in all, we had a great time as did Jordan as she was asking if she could return to Camp Keith and Shawna next year in Scottsdale!  We really enjoyed spending time with her - the experiment was a success!  In case anyone is wondering why Jordan's face is scratched up in the photos, on the morning that she flew out to visit us, she fell on the driveway at her house chasing her dog.  Of course, we were worried all weekend if anyone would be looking at the two of us wondering if we did this to her!  Thankfully no one stopped us but a woman at the airport did question Jordan if she was OK and if she needed any help.

Jean and Dick Visit - Mothers Day Weekend 2016

Dodds Clan at Baltimore Harbor
Keith's parents had not visited us in Baltimore yet.  To take advantage of the weather, we invited them to join us for Mother's Day weekend.

Shawna was in Austin on the Thursday so Keith picked his parents up at the airport and brought them back to the house and then immediately walked over to Fork and Wrench for dinner.  It was a delicious dinner, then we returned to the house for another bottle of wine as we waited for Shawna to arrive and join us for a last glass of wine before bed.

Inn at Perry Cabin
Keith's parent's drove themselves to DC on Friday as they were to meet up with friends from their Lindblad trips.  We were planning on seeing a movie that night but the terrible traffic back from DC prevented that - instead we just had wine/cheese to start and then salad for dinner followed by watching a Blacklist that none of us had seen from that week.

House on St Michael's Walking Tour
Saturday was the big excursion day.  We left early in the morning to St Michaels, a 1:40 drive from the house.  We arrived in time for a coffee at San Domingo before joining a walking tour.  The tour was with the St Michaels Museum and lasted about 90 minutes.  There were about 15 people on the tour with us.  The town is incredibly cute with old houses and a great history.  The only drawback of the tour was it was a bit of a factoid download without anecdotes or stories.  The tour finished at the Maritime Museum. We then walked the ten minutes to the Inn at Perry Cabin where we had a noon lunch reservation.  We shared a crab cake sandwich and mussels while Keith's parents each got their own mussels.  Lunch was delicious and an elegant location.  We walked around the back lawn where Wedding Crashers was filmed then went back to the car which was parked in town. The next stop was Annapolis where we dropped by the tourist bureau to get a map and then navigated around the historic part of town.  We walked by the capital, governors mansion, a few churches, old homes with a variety of architecture, and wrapped it up with a tour of the gardens at William Paca house.  It was still a bit early so we drove back to Baltimore and had dinner at Darbar where we had twelve spice chicken curry.  Dinner was delicious.

Sunday was the day to explore Baltimore Harbor.  It was Mothers Day so Shawna cooked up a delicious breakfast of Shakshuka.  We walked to Fells Point for a walking tour, stopping by The Daily Grind for a drink to start.  The walking tour, hosted by Claire, was really well done with the right balance of history and architecture.  Following the tour, we walked around the harbor in time to catch the Watermark boat tour.  It was a 45 minute narrated ride around the harbor to Fort McHenry and back.  By that time, it was later afternoon so time to walk back to the house and relax before walking to dinner at Blue Hill Tavern.  Since it was Mothers Day, the menu was a bit limited but still tasty - we shared the swordfish.

Fells Point
Shawna had to work on Monday and Keith had a few job search calls in the morning so his parents went for a walk to Daily Grind and back.  Keith and his parents had a quick lunch at Nalley Fresh, and since it was supposed to rain they went to see the movie Mothers Day.  Dinner was at Thames Street Oyster House where we ate upstairs.  Jean and Dick had a flight on the Tuesday morning so Keith dropped them off at the airport with plans to see them two weeks later at the celebration of life for Jessie.

Kim and Tom Family Visit - Easter Weekend - March 2016

The Snarrrrrssss
We invited Kim, Tom, and the kids down to Baltimore for Easter as it was a weekend that the kids did not really have any activities planned home.  They made it to our house by 4:30pm.

We gave them the nickel tour of the house and then got them all settled in - we had set out the foam mattress in the beach room so there were two queen beds.  We had a couple of beers at the house before walking over to Bo Brooks tiki bar for buckets of beer.  Amazingly, Ryan saw a school friend as he and Riley were running around the brick path- a German couple that Kim and Tom knew who had stopped off in the area on the way to DC.  After a couple rounds of beer and a crab pretzel we walked over to Canton Square for dinner.  We did not have a reservation so had to check out a couple of places before settling on Claddagh pub.  We all ordered basic pub food - we had the fish tacos.

Camden Yards

Saturday, we had some breakfast at the house before heading over to Starbucks so Kim could load up on her "mommy juice" - which we think Kim may be spinning with vodka!  Our next stop was Camden Yards, so we Ubered over since it would have been a really long walk.  The tour of the Orioles stadium was quite good - and the place was getting set up since opening day was only 9 days out.  We saw the plaques in the ground for the home run hits that went over the fence, went down to the dugout, and then saw the party rooms and media centers.  The entire tour was about 1.5 hours.

It was then time for lunch so we made a pit stop at Shake Shack in the Inner Harbor - which worked out well so that Kim could get get food for Riley at the Chick Fil A next door.  It was our first shake shack experience - pretty good for "fast food" hamburgers.  We walked along the harbor, stopping at Itsugar so Keith could get some gummies for the kids.  That enabled us to crack them on sugar to carry them through the Science Museum.  The museum was quite well done - definitely designed for kids.  That said, the adults had fun making a few of the experiments into competitions: balance, dancing, heart rate, and then jumping between floor markers (this wasn't even a science game - we made it up).  It was a long walk back to the house so we broke it up with a few beers at Slainte in Fells Point.  After walking the rest of the way home, Shawna set out wine and cheese for us all to nibble on as we were getting showered and ready for dinner.  Kaley was the assigned babysitter for Ryan and Riley - she stayed in the room while the other kids watched The Good Dinosaur as the rest of us went out to dinner at Fleet Street Kitchen.  We started with a cocktail in the bar which took a really long time to make.  Dinner was pretty good - we had a four course menu paired with wine.

After the 'hunt'
Sunday morning was Easter and the easter bunny did stop by - since we have no yard the bunny left the eggs on the second and third floors of the house.  There were only a few tears over who got which eggs - probably better than when Keith was a kid!  Each of the kids had a few of their eggs before we left the house - again with the first stop being Starbucks.  Shawna had arranged an earlier brunch at Alexanders Tavern in Fells Point - Shawna had an omelet and Keith had the breakfast burrito.  No one had any mimosas - we had plenty to drink the day before!  We timed the end of lunch to coincide with the departure of the water taxi - it was a great way to see a bit more of the harbor and we had never been on it before.  We had paid for an annual membership at the Aquarium earlier that week - with one of the benefits being we get to skip the tourist line and go to the member entrance.  We get "free" tickets and up to four guests get a discount on tickets.  The aquarium was really well done - with the ground floor pool in the first building being really cool with rays and black tipped sharks.  Another tank was exclusively for larger sharks and that was pretty amazing.  We wrapped up the tour in the dolphin area, seeing the tail end of a presentation.

National Aquarium
Ryan had wanted steamed crabs so we went back to the house and ate at Bo Brooks - this time in the restaurant.  Tom and Ryan shared six steamers while rest of us had lighter items.  Following lunch they packed up the car and started off for home.  The house was in really good shape - we did the sheets while watching TV and called it an early night at 9pm.
